The Alliance believes that all people with mental health problems should have a statutory right to a comprehensive, holistic assessment of their health and social care needs with a further right to receive services to meet those assessed needs.

The Draft Mental Health Bill proposed to end the current entitlement to free aftercare services for patients who have been detained in hospital and replace it with a six week period of free care services. We believe that mental health legislation should provide all detained patients with the right to free aftercare.. This provision is crucial in ensuring people remain engaged with services on discharge, receive continuing support and do not relapse.
